The spectacular has become routine for Barrington High School track and field seniors Luis Cossio, Ray Niro and Alec Andrea.
The three were once again front and center and at their best during the Broncos' easy win at the 86th annual Palatine Relays on April 28 at Chick Anderson Stadium.
Cossio, Niro and Andrea teamed with fellow senior Michael Dreiling to help Broncos secure second place in the 400 meter relay (43.45), and later added sophomore EJ Darlington to the mix in sprinting out to a top finish in the 800 meter relay (1:30.22).
Host Palatine finished second to the Broncos’ 154-point showing with 93 points, followed by Mundelein (86 points), Fremd (76 points) and Portage, Indiana. (75 points).
When all was said and done, Barrington coach Todd Kuklinski told the Daily Herald he’s seen it all before from his star trio.
"They've been around," he said. "Hopefully we can keep this going and there will be some special things at the end."
Andrea capped his day by sharing the McElroy Award given to the meet’s most outstanding male athlete with Mundelein senior Bobby Nuzzo. In addition to his work on the relay teams, Andrea finished third in the 200 (22.25) and sparked the Broncos to a second-place finish in the long jump relays.
"It's amazing," Andrea told the Daily Herald. "I wouldn't have done this without my teammates and Coach K (Kuklinski). We've been in the same relays since sophomore year. We have good chemistry and our handoffs are always on point."
The defending 3A State champion in the 400 meter, Cossio added to his big day by bagging the title in that event (50.51) and finishing second in the 200 meter (22.20).
"Our sprinting crew has been together for awhile," said Cossio. "It was our last Palatine Relay, so it's special."
