Village of Lisle issued the following announcement on May 1.
The month of May is Building Safety Month; this public awareness campaign encourages individuals, families and businesses to take appropriate steps to ensure that the places we live, learn, work, worship and play create safe and sustainable homes and buildings.
In support of this international effort, the Village recommends the following tips to keep your home and business safe:
Check smoke detectors – Manually test all smoke detectors and replace any spent batteries. Add detectors on every level of your home and in each bedroom.
Install a carbon monoxide detector – Detectors should be installed within 15 feet of every sleeping room and on every floor of your home.
Use electrical cords safely – Check power strips and electrical cords to make sure that they are within the designated load capacity. Overloaded outlets and undersized extension cords can create a fire or electrocution safety hazard.
Have an escape plan – Develop a fire escape plan and practice the evacuation with your household. All members of the household should know two ways to get out of every room, and hallways should be clear of obstructions to allow for safe exiting.
