Patty Smith is vowing to fix a broken system as she campaigns to unseat Rep. Stephanie Kifowit (D-Oswego) in the 84th District.
Smith, a Republican and a single mother of three from Aurora, said her campaign will be centered on addressing the concerns of middle-class families across the area.
"As a hard-working single mother of three, I know firsthand the struggles that middle-class families face here in Aurora,” she said in a statement. “And as the mother of a young adult with Down syndrome who relies on social services, I understand the need for a state government that works.”
Smith said she is running to help repair a broken system where maintaining the status quo is valued above all else and “puts special interests and career politicians first, and our families last.”
Smith described Kifowit as “a failure for our district” and pointed to her support of House Speaker Mike Madigan (D-Chicago) and the tax-raising policies he has implemented.
“We need a state representative who will work to fix our broken state and stand up to Mike Madigan,” she added in the press release. “As an independent voice, I will go down to Springfield to do just that."
A paralegal for a nonprofit organization that offers free legal services to low-income individuals, Smith has also served on several educational committees and foundations in the area, earning the Volunteer of the Year award from the City of Aurora in 2008.
