City of Elmhurst Economic Development Commission met February 23.

Here is the minutes as provided by the commission:

Present: Bill Shanklin, Chair, Rich Reichert, Vice Chair, Diane McGinnis, Maryann Gorski, Julie Coan, Chris LaBounty, Bill Huber, Kurt Schiele, Tim Ricordati, Nina Coppola Radke, Don Meyers, Mark Anglewicz, Melissa Villanueva

The EDC meeting was called to order at 7:31 a.m.

The Minutes of the January 26, 2018 meeting were approved as submitted.

There were no public comments.

Bill Shanklin welcomed everyone to the Elmhurst American Legion and shared the Legion’s commitment to the local community and its’ veterans. He also mentioned the recently remodeled Normandy Room and the new external, electronic signage. The Legion provided breakfast fare as well.

Ken Bartels announced the resignation of Commissioner Matt Galas due to work concerns. He also mentioned that former 7th Ward Alderman, Pat Wagner, is being processed for the vacancy subject to City Council approval. Ken also shared that of the five commissioners up for reappointment on April 30th, four have requested reappointment: Kurt Schiele (EDC appointee), Mark Anglewicz, Chris LaBounty and Nina Coppola Radke (Mayoral appointees). Bill Huber is not requesting reappointment but will fill out the remainder of his term. Candidates will be sought and considered. Ken reminded reappointees that they need to fill out the City web site form and provide an updated resume to be reappointed.

Erin Jason shared that a meeting to begin the planning of the 5th Women-in-Management event will be held very soon. No calendar date as yet.

Erin then briefly updated the EDC on: Kimmer’s Ice Cream, The Stray Hen, UPS Store, CHOW site and The York Building.

Mike Kopp mentioned the City’s ‘Commission Appreciation Event’ being held on March 1st from 6-9 p.m. at the Elmhurst Art Museum and encouraged attendance. The proposed TIF6 public meeting will be held on March 5th at City Hall. The DPZ Committee is discussing a planned development ordinance.

This EDC meeting is the annual ‘brainstorming session’ for the EDC. Ken led a discussion based upon a list of topics created by commissioners and staff that had been shared earlier. Out of a total list of 15 topics the following were discussed at some length: TIF6, sports complex, Houseal-Lavigne Subplans. Other topics touched on: Business Parks Plan, 294 expansion, new Metra Station and the Elmhurst Centre for the Performing Arts. Notes on the discussion will be forthcoming to the EDC.

Coming out of the TIF6 discussion, the EDC voted unanimously to endorse TIF6 as presented by the City and as has been presented to the EDC at previous meetings. Commissioner Chris LaBounty offered to attend the March 5th public meeting and share the EDC endorsement. Ken and Erin will assist Chris accordingly.

John Quigley shared the great success of the ‘Elmhurst-Opoly’ game project promoted by the Chamber as part of their Centennial Celebration. The games are completely sponsored (in record time) and should be available for purchase ($25) by May or June.

Kevin York reminded the EDC of the Elmhurst College President’s Breakfast on March 10th

.The next EDC meeting is Friday, March 23, 2018 at City Hall.

The EDC was adjourned at 9:03 a.m.
