Westmont-based Maercker Elementary District 60 will be selling $28 million in bonds after approximately 61 percent of those voting in Tuesday's referendum said yes to the proposal that will enhance two of the districts oldest buildings.
According to an article in the Chicago Tribune, the bond sale will be used for facilities for full-day kindergarten and early childhood programs at Holmes School in Clarendon Hills, as well as build science labs and renovate the music, arts and performance spaces at Westview Hills Middle School in Willowbrook.
The bond sale is expected add about $144 a year to the tax bill for the owner of a $300,000 home, according to the Tribune article.
The measure was approved after a year-long engagement process with the community.
Data from the Illinois State Board of Education shows enrollment in the Maercker district is down 8 percent over the last decade. Additionally, the district is currently more than $16 million in debt.
