Advisory referendum on recreational use of marijuana should not be a priority, Nybo says

Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) recently said asking voters whether to legalize the recreational use of marijuana is not an important enough to place on the ballot as an advisory question.

During debate in the Senate on Feb. 28, SB2275, a measure sponsored by Sen. Bill Cunningham (D-Chicago) that would place the advisory question on the ballot, was rejected by Nybo, who brought up the very same concerns when the ballot question was raised at a committee hearing.

Term limits and property tax reduction are what the public should be asked, Nybo said, noting he does not oppose legalizing recreational use of marijuana but feels there are so many other more important issues the legislative body should address.

State Senator Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) cosponsored "Charlie's Law."

“I would frankly put this one very low down the list,” Nybo said.

As in the committee meeting, Cunningham reminded Nybo that all the other states that have approved marijuana for recreational use have asked the public their opinion before passing a law.

Nybo was not moved and urged a "no" vote but to no avail.

The bill passed and voters in the Nov. 6 general election will be asked “Shall the State of Illinois legalize the cultivation, manufacture, distribution, testing, and sale of marijuana and marijuana products for recreational use by adults 21 and older subject to state regulation, taxation and local ordinance?”
