DuPage County Community Services Block Grant Advisory Board met October 25. 

Here is the minutes as provided by the board:

1. Call to Order

8:30am meeting was called to order by Kristin Sheffield at 8:39 am.

2. Roll Call

Present: Kristin Sheffield, Vanessa Roth, Millie Rodriguez, Christina LePage, Molly Howieson, Don Davia, Kathleen McNamara, Laurel Bowen,

Absent: Elizabeth Chaplin, Robert Larsen, Sam Tornatore, Amy L. Grant, Tonia Khouri, Gary Grasso, Jamie Pacis, Angela Bentsen

Vanessa Roth, from Outreach Community Ministries, was introduced by Kristin Sheffield, to replace LaTanya Gatewood as a member of the CSBG Advisory Board. Kristin Sheffield requested a motion to appoint Vanessa Roth to the CSBG Advisory Board, Laurel Bowen motioned, seconded by Millie Rodriguez, all voted aye. The motion was carried.

3. Public Comments and Concerns

No public comments were received at this meeting.

4. Scholarship

Lisa Hamilton and Jennifer Komis presented to the Board one, of the ten recipients of CSBG Scholarship program. Mirza Baig is currently enrolled at UIC and majoring in Business, Mirza plans to use the Scholarship for the cost of his tuition. Mirza Baig thanked the Board for their generosity and shared since he was awarded the scholarship it has provided him the opportunity to volunteer as a tutor for refugees. Lisa Hamilton explained that there were 11 applicants that were graded and awarded scholarship but only 10 recipients received scholarship funding due to one candidate not continuing with their education. The CSBG Board offered congratulations to the Scholarship recipient and wished him well with his studies and future endeavors.

5. Approval of Minutes

Kristin Sheffield called for a motion to approve the July 12, 2017 meeting minutes. Laurel Bowen made a motion to approve the minutes, Molly Howieson seconded the motion, and all voted aye. The motion was carried.

6. Reports - Gina Strafford-Ahimed

Gina Strafford-Ahmed explained the 3' Quarter reports for the 2017 CSBG grant. Lisa Hamilton went over the 2017 CSBG Services Report and detailed each programs goals, progress and accomplishments. Lisa Hamilton briefly explained the tracking of the services and how it is reported through STARS. Handouts provided.

7. Budget Review - Gina Strafford-Ahimed

Gina Strafford-Ahmed reviewed the CSBG 2017 Budget and Expenditure Report. Handouts provided. Gina Strafford-Ahmed explained some of the 2017 grant money would be rolled over to the 2018 grant. This is due to the change in the CSBG Grant from 18-month grant to a 12-month grant.

8. Family Selfsufficiency Program (FSS)

Anna Varona-Doromal and Keyana Peterson from Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) presented information about the program and services that are provided. Anna Varona-Doromal explained, the FSS program is a five-year program which helps families to develop career plans, reach family goals, and obtain services with the goal of achieving economic self-sufficiency. Anna VaronaDoromal informed the Board there is also financial assistance available to participants to help reach their goals. Graduates of the program have attained financial security and have gone on to buy homes.

9. New Business-Ginastrafford-Ahmed

Gina Strafford-Ahmed will follow up with the CSBG Board on the Board Self-Assessment.

10. Future Agenda Tems

The Board requested a representative from the DuPage Care Center, formally the DuPage Convalescent center to present in January their services. The Board would also like to hear from Access DuPage about the Dispensary of Hope available through the DuPage Care Center Pharmacy.

Mary Keating suggested that Impact DuPage attend January's meeting to explain the process of the needs assessment that will need to be done in July.

11. Board Member Comments

Molly Howieson mentioned that Bridge Communities still has some openings left to keep sending them clients.

12. Informational Items

Kathleen McNamara from the Carol Stream Police Department mentioned that they have a Christmas Sharing Program beginning November 1, 2017. During this time they will be seeking donations (groceries and toys for kids up to the age of 12) for the families in Carol Stream area. For more information you may contact the Carol Stream non-emergency number. Donations will be distributed to the registered families om Thursday, December 14, 2017.

13. Adjournment

Kristin Sheffield called for a motion to adjourn the meeting, Don Davia made the motion to adjourn, Laurel Bowen seconded the motion, and all voted aye. The motion was carried. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:44 am

2018 Meeting Dates: January 10, 2018, April 11, 2018, July 11, 2018 and October 24, 2018
