The minutes of the October 12, 2017 meeting were approved as presented.

Report and Recommendation:

Wood Dale Branding

Discussion:

Mr. Cage reported a Comprehensive Plan Open House was held last week, and that

branding was a major component of that event.

Michael Blue of Teska and Carl Wohlt of the WohltGroup were present for this discussion.

Mr. Wohlt reported that since 2009 they have been seeing an increased interest in

branding and marketing, and public relations. He provided examples of other towns that

have done this, which include Mundelein, Lombard, and Orland Park. They are not

looking at replacing the current Wood Dale seal, but want to create something for a more

contemporary environment. They’ve met with several focus groups within the city for

input. A review was done of other peer communities and they then tried to experience

the Wood Dale “brand experience.” They used a 30 minute commute time from Wood

Dale since that’s what most people use when going for entertainment. He feels Wood

Dale has a national and international reach that other communities do not have, especially

with the proximity to the airport. The goal is to differentiate Wood Dale from other

communities, and have a small logo that is clear to view on a smartphone. Ideas

displayed showed the merging of a cluster of leaves together that will show up better in

color. This sample design was tested on various items such as a water tower, clothing,

etc. Mr. Blue and Mr. Wohlt are looking for input before finalizing the design.

Ald. Messina suggested making the “w” and “d” in wood dale both a bit larger than the

rest of the lettering. Ald. E. Wesley asked that some different fonts be presented. Ald.

Catalano is not fond of the colorful leaves as he prefers the dark black outline. Ald.

Messina also had some concerns about the colors being re-created differently by various

vendors. Ald. Sorrentino inquired about having to change the city signs. Mr. Wohlt stated

that Wood Dale’s current sign is already a very good one and suggested doing a form of

retrofit. Ald. Messina commented that they need to be careful about using a plane image

as residents are very opposed to O’Hare, while businesses like the proximity to the airport.

Vote:

Ald. Woods made a motion, seconded by Ald. Messina, to direct staff to direct Teska and

the WohltGroup to move forward with the branding of Wood Dale. A roll call vote was

taken, with the following results:

Ayes: Ald. Catalano, Jakab, Messina, Sorrentino, E. Wesley, R. Wesley & Woods
