John “Tig” Tiegen, a retired Marine sergeant who was part of the security team after the Sept. 11, 2012, attack in Benghazi, Libya, will be the featured speaker at this year’s DuPage Republican Day Dinner on Oct. 23, according to a press release.
Tiegen is co-author of 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi, a collaboration wth other members of the CIA’s Global Response Staff (GRS) Annex Security Team at the Benghazi diplomatic compound and New York Times best-selling author Mitchell Zuckoff. As part of the security team, Tiegen was instrumental in saving the lives of more than two dozen people on the compound, with the team providing a rapid response then sustained defense for more than 13 hours.
Tiegen was also a consultant on the film adaptation of the book, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, lending his real-life experiences to the movie and providing script and set design assistance.

Following his career in the Marines, Tiegen joined Blackwater Security as a contractor, serving in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq before joining the CIA’s GRS. He served more than 40 deployments with the GRS, providing security in high-risk environments.
Tickets for the event at the Medinah Shriners in Addison are $50 for committeemen and veterans, $100 for general admission and $250 for VIP admission. A table ticket for 10 costs $1,500, and sponsorship packages are available from $500.
