Elmhurt will soon lose its Kmart store as part of the shuttering of 28 retail locations across the United States, the chain's owner, Sears, announced recently.
The closures follow a 23 percent decrease in total revenue, according to USA Today. Illinois will also lose Kmarts in Oak Lawn and Belleville.
The Elmhurst Kmart, at 265 S. Route 83, will be shut down by mid-November. Sears Holdings and the city staff are expected to collaborate to find an appropriate tenant for the 110,000-square-foot property.
Kmart locations will also close in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and South Carolina.
Liquidation sales began at the end of August.
The first Kmart opened by 1962 in Garden City, Michigan, offering a discount department store experience and named after the founder, Sebastian Spering Kresge.
