Voters defeated a Wheaton-Warrenville Community Unit School District 200 referendum that sought $132.5 million for building projects across the district.
With all 87 precincts reporting, about 54 percent of voters opposed the measure, which would have raised property taxes to pay down a 19-year loan, according to the Daily Herald. On a home valued at more than $322,000, the homeowner's tax bill would have gone up $180 to $295 per year for the first nine years. By the year 2036, a homeowner under the same parameters would be taxed at $531 annually.
The Daily Herald reported that opponents to the measure said it would become too expensive. Superintendent Jeff Schuler estimated about $6.5 million is needed to address mechanical system failures, roofing and plumbing needs and other general infrastructure costs across the district.
