A showcase called The Awakenings Project is on display at Aurora City Hall as part of the Art at City Hall exhibit.
The exhibit is a collection of artists' works focusing on their struggles with mental illness. It has been a popular exhibit throughout the Chicago area for two decades after its first show at the 1997 National Alliance for the Mentally Ill’s annual conference in Illinois. The first show attracted almost 50 artists who displayed their work.
The exhibit in Aurora features 16 artists: Peter Hallock Austin, Faith Burmania, Ryan Chacey, Sirene Christman, Trish Evers, Julie Hough, Kelsey Kowalski, Robert King Lundin, Sandy Jo Mazurek, William Eddie Nilan, Irene Lamb O'Neil, John Rakow, Mandy Rakow, Linda Stepanek, Kurt Taecker and Anton Witek.
The exhibit will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through Aug. 11. Aurora City Hall is at 44 E. Downer Place.
