Editorial: Deb Conroy just put herself in a bucket of despicables

What kind of heinous person would be in favor of rape, incest and cancer? What kind of depraved person would vote for a candidate who is pro-rape, pro-incest and pro-cancer?

We've never encountered a person who fits either profile, but we have come across a candidate who's willing to suggest that her opponent and her opponent's supporters fit those descriptions.

State Rep. Deb Conroy

Despicable, isn't it?

Pat Conroy, the Democratic state representative for Illinois' 46th District and candidate for re-election, has so few accomplishments to boast of and so little to promise if returned to office that she could think of no better way to advance her campaign than by smearing her rival with the vilest misrepresentations of her positions.

“Heidi Holan's extreme views would put women's lives at risk” screams the headline – in large, upper-case red letters – on a mailer sent to District 46 residents by Conroy, and paid for by the Democratic Party of Illinois (and obviously approved by Chairman Mike Madigan).

Nevertheless, Conroy (and mentor Madigan) double down in the body copy, warning that “Heidi Holan won't stand up for women” and that she “opposes a woman's right to choose, even for victims of rape and incest, and would cut funding for critical women's health services like breast cancer screenings and for shelters serving victims of domestic violence.”

Conroy further charges that Holan “opposed funding necessary to process thousands of untested rape kits to ensure rapists are brought to justice for their crimes.”

Of course, Holan's view are not extreme in the least. She's pro-life, that's all; and a fiscal conservative, as are roughly half of the district's residents, which is why Holan nearly defeated Conroy in the last election. The suggestion that such widely held and sensible views would put women's lives at risk is absurd on its face.

Personally, we'd rather be in a basket of deplorables with Heidi Holan than in a bucket of despicables with Deb Conroy.
