Republican candidate for House District 46 Heidi Holan stepped up to the plate and signed the "No More Madigan" pledge last week.
"I signed the Pledge — No More Madigan!" Holan said. "He's been in the House 46 years, serving as Speaker for 32 years. The Speaker controls the bills in the House. After being sworn in, the first vote Representatives take is for Speaker of the House. A vote for Madigan is a vote of approval for the current condition of Illinois."
In addition to vowing to vote against Mike Madigan (D-Dist. 22) as the House Speaker for the next session, Holan went to bat for voters by supporting term limits and the redistricting amendment.
Term limits, which the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale reports approximately four out of five Illinois residents support, would ensure that Madigan and other long-standing lawmakers would be forced out of the House.
Citizen efforts to change the way districts are mapped in Illinois resulted in a redistricting amendment. A lawsuit has kept the amendment off the 2016 ballot. The recent ruling against the Independent Map Amendment in the Cook County Circuit Court has not ended the battle. The Illinois Supreme Court granted the motion for a direct appeal on the Circuit Court's ruling. If the Supreme Court rules in favor of the citizen-based amendment before Aug. 26, it will be placed on the November ballot.
