West Chicago resumes spring collection, recycling services
As spring has arrived, the City of West Chicago, Illinois is reminding its residents that several seasonal services have resumed.
The services include leaf collection, yard waste collection, brush pickup and hydrant flushing. In addition, officials reiterate the need for cross-connection device inspections. There are also several recycling/collection events planned for residents on specific dates.
Regarding leaf collection, residents may dispose of an unlimited quantity of leaves during the week of April 25 through April 29, on the regularly scheduled garbage pickup day. Stickers are not required for leaves during this week. All leaves must be placed in a biodegradable “Kraft” yard waste bag or a 95-gallon yard waste cart. Leaves will not be accepted in plastic bags or cardboard boxes. No other yard waste may be mixed with the leaves.
Yard waste collection service had resumed on April 1 and continue through November 30. All yard waste that is not placed in a 95-gallon yard waste cart must be placed in a biodegradable “Kraft” yard waste bag, and must have a universal sticker attached.
West Chicago’s monthly brush pickup program will begin on May 2 and run through the end of November. Brush must be placed at the curb no earlier than two days prior to the first Monday of each month.
The City’s Water Utility Division will flush fire hydrants during the last two weeks of April. The service helps maintain West Chicago’s water distribution system and makes sure hydrants are operable in the event of an emergency. Flushing will take place on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Signs will be posted in the areas one day prior to hydrant flushing.
Cross-connection control devices, which prevent harmful materials from entering the public water system, are required by law to be inspected at least once per year. The inspection of mechanical devices shall include physical testing in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Results of the devices inspected must be forwarded to the City’s Public Works Department. Please call the Public Works Department at 630-293-2255 with any questions.
There are also two recycling and collection events benefitting West Chicago residents. The annual Citywide Garbage Collection Event is offered on the homeowner’s regularly scheduled garbage collection day during the week of May 2 through May 6. Residents can dispose of nearly any household item, but must affix a total of eight “Refuse” stickers on their pile. Items must be termed “Acceptable Items” for pickup. These items include: garage and attic clean-out debris; barbeque grills; bicycles; carpeting, if rolled into sections not exceeding four-foot in length and not weighing more than 50 pounds per roll; household construction materials (e.g., lumber, drywall, plywood, doors) if bundled or placed within 33 gallon refuse containers and/or not weighing more than 50 pounds); furniture; box springs and mattresses, and household fixtures excluding electronics.
The list of items not accepted includes: hazardous waste; tires; automotive parts, fluids and batteries (e.g., oil, transmission fluid, windshield washing fluid, starters, brake shoes, etc.); household batteries; oil based paint; pesticides; and propane tanks, and large household appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers). Small household appliances (e.g., toasters, televisions, microwaves, computers, monitors, speakers, stereo equipment) are no longer acceptable items as they are now banned from Illinois landfills from all sources under penalty of law. You may visit www.dupageco.org/recycling for more information on recycling the materials listed above.
Lastly, the City’s Environmental Commission is hosting an on-site Paper Shredding Event on Saturday, June 4 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the City Hall parking lot at 475 Main St. Residents can make sure that any personal and financial documents are destroyed in a safe, secure and environmentally responsible manner. Each homeowner or business can bring up to 10 boxes of confidential paperwork to be quickly destroyed on the premises by trained professionals.
