In recognition for the city’s ongoing commitment to urban forest management, the Village of Lombard, Illinois was recently named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.
To receive the honor and recognize the special day, Lombard is inviting its residents to a special Arbor Day Celebration on Friday, April 29 at 1 p.m. at Hammerschmidt School, located at the intersection of New Street and Stewart Avenue.
Cities qualify for Tree City USA status by meeting four requirements: the presence of a tree board or department, establishing a tree-care ordinance, securing an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and planning and execution of an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
"Tree City USA communities see the impact that an urban forest has in their community first hand,” Dan Lambe, President of the Arbor Day Foundation, said. “Additionally, recognition brings residents together and creates a sense of community pride, whether it’s through volunteer engagement or public education.”
Lambe also explained the important role that trees play in our communities, stating that when properly planted and cared for, they help to improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants and provide wildlife habitat.
During the event, participants will have the opportunity to distribute mulch among the Oak and Kentucky Coffee trees that were recently planted at the school.
