Downers Grove Village Council supports Meals on Wheels program

Moneycash

The Downers Grove Village Council discussed a resolution supporting the reinstatement of Meals on Wheels at its Feb. 2 meeting.

The state budget impasse has affected the Meals on Wheels program, reducing deliveries from five to two per week. Commissioner Greg Hosé asked the council to call upon the state General Assembly and governor to pass legislation to fund the program. He also urged constituents to contact their representatives and express support for Meals on Wheels.

The council approved the motion unanimously.

The council also discussed borrowing funds for water improvements from the Public Water Supply Loan Program of the Illinois Environment Protection Agency (IEPA).

By borrowing from the IEPA loan program versus using municipal bonds, the village would save approximately $300,000 in interest over a 20-year loan period. The authorization to use the loan program will not obligate the village to borrow the money but opens up its ability to use the loan program in the future.

The council also heard a proposal to refund the 2008 stormwater bonds. Refunding the bonds would save the village approximately $852,000 in total.
