Spring services resuming soon for West Chicago residents
With the spring season right around the corner, the city of West Chicago is cranking up its package of spring services for residents once again.
There are a number of programs and events to keep track of, and city leaders want to ensure that residents have all of the information necessary to take advantage of them.
Leaf Collection Week is April 25 thru April 29. During this week, residents may dispose of an unlimited quantity of leaves on their regularly scheduled garbage pickup day. No decals will be required for leaves during this week, but no additional yard waste may be included.
All leaves must be placed in a biodegradable “Kraft” yard waste bag or a 95-gallon yard waste cart. Leaves in any other container will not be collected.
West Chicago will resume pick up of yard waste on April 1. The service will continue through the week of November 30. All yard waste that is not placed in a 95-gallon yard waste cart must be placed in a biodegradable “Kraft” yard waste bag with a universal sticker attached.
The city will also begin the 2016 brush pickup program on May 2. As in previous years, the monthly service will run through November. Brush will be collected from the curb on the first Monday of each month. Officials ask that no brush be placed on the curb more than two days prior to collection day.
West Chicago is also reminding residents about the annual Citywide Collection Event, which is scheduled between May 2 and May 6. The event is a one-week period during which homeowners may dispose of items that are larger than usual.
Residents must place “Refuse” stickers on the items to be collected on their normally scheduled collection day during that week. Only certain types of items will be accepted.
The list of accepted items includes (but is not limited to) garage and attic clean-out debris, barbecue grills, bicycles, carpeting (rolled into sections not exceeding four feet in length and not weighing more than 50 pounds per roll), household construction materials (if bundled or placed within 33 gallon refuse containers and/or not weighing more than 50 pounds), furniture, box springs and mattresses and household fixtures (excluding electronics).
Unacceptable items include (but are not limited to) hazardous waste tires; automotive parts, fluids and batteries; household batteries; oil based paint; pesticides; propane tanks; large household appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers); and small household appliances (toasters, televisions, microwaves, computers, monitors, speakers, stereo equipment).
More information regarding these items can be found online at www.dupageco.org/recycling or by calling Michelle Baldino at (630) 293-2255.
Other services and events for West Chicago residents include hydrant flushing, water backflow prevention inspections and on-site paper shredding.
