The DuPage County Board recently approved the 2016 budget, which includes spending cuts and holds property taxes steady for the eighth consecutive year.

“This budget highlights my commitment and the board’s commitment to live within our means while offering the highest level of service to our residents without raising property taxes,” DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said. “For the past five years, we have been fiscally responsible, open and transparent to taxpayers, and we have been able to accomplish remarkable savings while still fulfilling our mission as a county government.”

The budget, which goes into effect on Tuesday, includes appropriations of $444.4 million for the year, down $5.1 million from the 2015 budget. Cronin has garnered a reputation for spending cuts. Since taking office five years ago, Cronin has cut over $33 million from the county budget.

The 2016 budget includes $56.5 million for stormwater, drainage and road-construction projects.

“This has been an unusual year as we await a final budget from Springfield,” DuPage County Finance Committee Chairman Paul Fichtner said. “In response, we've built a conservative county budget. Our careful approach has served us well and provides the flexibility we need as we prepare for the year ahead.”

DuPage County's sales tax will fall a quarter-cent on Jan. 1, 2016, as well. That portion of sales tax currently funds the DuPage Water Commission, which is transitioning into a self-sustaining utility. The sales tax reduction alone will return nearly $33 million to DuPage County residents. To view the full budget, visit www.dupageco.org/finance.
