U.S. Sens. Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) recently introduced the Government Transformation Act, which would mandate the creation of an independent commission to weed out government waste and inefficient practices.
The bill also would give Congress action measures it could take to improve the efficiency of government programs.
“By eliminating outdated and underutilized programs like agencies and offices that print documents already found online, we can save taxpayers millions,” Kirk said. “This bipartisan bill is a step toward reducing government waste and inefficiency.”
The bill's mandated seven-member government-transformation commission would be given the mission of creating taxpayer savings and targeting government waste. A required independent review would come with recommended steps to improve efficiency.
Kirk also is the co-author of the Just Google It Act, which would eliminate the National Technical Information Service (NTIS), a costly federal agency that prints and sells copies of government documents that can be found online. Research indicates that the operating costs of the NTIS this year alone total $170 million.
