Officials and staff members from the Village of Lombard recently celebrated the success of the new Metra Underpass Tunnel at the Lombard Train Station with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Village President Keith Giagnorio sliced the ceremonial ribbon and unveiled a plaque to commemorate the project's success. Lombard Village Trustees Reid Foltyniewicz, Mike Fugiel, Bill Johnston, Robyn Pike, William Ware and Dan Whittington also attended the event.
“This tunnel was no small feat,” Giagnorio said. “It is because of long-term dedication and teamwork from all of the parties involved that we stand here today and welcome this addition to Lombard’s landscape.”
DuPage County, Metra, Union Pacific Railroad and Regional Transportation Authority officials also attended the event and spoke about the project's value for the community, including its contribution to public safety.
Because of the close proximity between commuter trains and pedestrians in the city, the Lombard Train Station was identified as an ideal location for a pedestrian tunnel because of its previous at-grade crossing. The underpass tunnel project was completed with a total price tag of $7,845,100. The village government contributed $294,000 toward the total. The tunnel was open for pedestrian traffic in May, but was fully completed in August.
