The Village of Westmont recently released plans for the city’s Environmental Improvement Commission recycling programs. Several opportunities are available to Westmont residents to participate in green initiatives that will help improve the environment within their community.
Some of the most popular recycling programs include:
HOLIDAY LIGHTS RECYCLING – Starting Friday and continuing through the end of January 2016, citizens can recycle their unwanted holiday lights at the Westmont Fire Department, 6015 S. Cass. The collection container will be marked and positioned in the south parking lot.
COOKING OIL RECYCLING -- On Nov. 29, the Saturday following Thanksgiving, there will be a cooking-oil recycling event 9 a.m. until noon at the Johanik Fire Station. Residents are encouraged to bring their used cooking oil to the event so that it can be collected and recycled.
SAFE DISPOSAL OF NEEDLES – Residents can visit the Sharps Kiosk in the lobby of the Westmont Police Department (500 N. Cass Avenue) during normal business hours to drop off unwanted or used needles. Needle receptacles are provided by the Police Department and should be used before needles are placed in the kiosk.
The Downers Grove Township Highway Department has discontinued its electronics recycling program due to rising costs. Westmont is currently investigating new opportunities for electronics recycling.
