After the U.S. House passed the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015, which President Obama signed into law on Monday, U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Dist. 8) released a statement explaining her support for the legislation, as well as the importance of preventing a government shutdown and creating a window for actual progress to be made.
“For too long, our government has jumped from manufactured crisis to manufactured crisis, from shutdown threat to actual shutdown,” Duckworth said. “For at least the next two years, this Bipartisan Budget Act will remove the threat of another shutdown and preserve the full faith and credit of the United States.”
Duckworth said that while the budget agreement is far from permanent, the two-year plan was, at the very least, a positive development.
“This compromise equally provides relief from sequestration’s harmful cuts to defense and non-defense spending, helping create hundreds of thousands of jobs, providing our troops with the security they deserve, investing in veterans’ care, supporting our children and protecting seniors from unprecedented Medicare premium increases," Duckworth said.
Duckworth also highlighted other areas about which she has serious concerns regarding the budget deal, particularly several provisions that threaten to devastate farm communities. Duckworth vowed to work with Republicans to “mitigate these misguided policies.”
