U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-Dist. 14) stood with other House lawmakers in voting against the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015, which passed the House on Wednesday, then was approved by the Senate on Friday.
The new budget plan increases the debt ceiling through March 2017, while offering no significant spending cuts to offset the expenditures.
“Responsible budgeting is one of the most important items in Congress’ job description, but we have again failed to do our jobs and live up to what Americans expect of us, and what our constituents deserve," Hultgren said. "Congress can’t get in the game of calling something a cap and then eviscerating it when it politically suits them.”
Hultgren also said that Washington’s spending habits are leading to ever-increasing budget deficits, with a national debt exceeding a record $18 trillion.
“Many government programs are in serious need of reform and oversight,” Hultgren said. “I have long advocated for structural reforms like a Balanced Budget Amendment that would require Congress to spend taxpayer dollars wisely and not in excess. We clearly need a stronger restraint on spending that will not buckle under political pressure.”
