The Village of Woodridge was presented with two awards late last week at the Link and Leverage Forum, hosted by Moraine Valley Community College, to honor the village's sustainability efforts.
Woodridge received a Silver Award through the Clean Air Counts program and a Certificate of Sustainability Efforts, both presented by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, which represents Chicago-area municipalities.
The awards acknowledge the village’s recent efforts to improve the environment, as well as minimize its impact on the environment. Activities recognized include the Village requiring green supplies in its janitorial contracts, replacing outdated lighting with more-efficient fixtures, mandating the use of low-VOC paints, undergoing HVAC system improvements to lower energy consumption, participating in the Tree City USA Program, and implementing a curbside recycling service.
“The Village continues to strive to make our operations more sustainable, efficient and kinder to the environment. We are very gracious for this award and thank the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus for recognizing the efforts that our officials and staff take to provide our residents with services in a responsible way,” Woodridge Mayor Gina Cunningham-Picek said.
The award was presented by Orland Park Mayor Dan McLaughlin, president of the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, and Andrew Duren, Moraine Valley Community College’s executive vice president of administration and chairman of the South Metropolitan Higher Education Consortium Sustainability Task Force.
“The steps taken by Woodridge to reduce emissions contribute to the regional success of Clean Air Counts,” McLaughlin said. “Together, communities and businesses in the region have avoided 15 tons of air pollution every day.”
