U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-Dist. 14) said late last week that he is co-sponsoring the Global Food Security Act of 2015.
H.R. 1567 aims to reduce global hunger by achieving food security and improving nutrition, especially for women and children in Third World nations.
The bill also promotes sustainable agriculture development and nutrition for children during the first 1,000 days of life. Also, the bill would reauthorize and strengthen the Feed the Future food program, which helped more than 7 million small farmers in developing countries increase the amount of food they grow.
“As we celebrate World Food Day, it’s clear a collective approach and supporting less-developed countries are key to fighting global poverty,” Hultgren said. “By collaborating with organizations in developing countries and by focusing on women and children, we make sure that we target society’s most vulnerable populations. This strategy also makes sure that taxpayer dollars are used in the most efficient and effective way."
