State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Dist. 23) recently hosted a community women's empowerment seminar, with an emphasis on finding ways to make communities safer for women.
Cullerton partnered with community organizations, medical experts, local law enforcement agencies, State Reps. Deb Conroy (D-Dist. 46) and Kathleen Willis (D-Dist. 77), and the Illinois Attorney General's Office to host an in-depth discussion on how the community can work together to combat sexual assault on campuses and at home.
“Community dialogue is essential to ending violence against women,” Cullerton said. “Our goal was to work together to ensure students and residents are aware of available resources and give them the opportunity to voice their concerns and share input on how we can work together to address this serious issue.”
This year, Cullerton sponsored House Bill 821, which provides a road map to existing federal requirements and sets standards to prevent and respond to sexual violence.
"Our top priority is to end campus assault," Cullerton said. "However, if an attack occurs, there needs to be clear and concise standards to give victims a comprehensive path to report crimes and be notified of their rights."
