Westmont to give residents free smoke detectors Oct. 3.
The Westmont Fire Department and Bales Ace Hardware on 20 E. Quincy St. have teamed up to provide free smoke detectors to Westmont residents who currently do not have one in their homes.
Resident may pick up the free smoke detector at the fire department open house on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 1 to 3 p.m., at the Frank J. Johanik Fire Station Headquarters, located at 6015 S. Cass Ave.
A total of 50 smoke detectors will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
"We used to receive grant monies that allowed the fire department to implement this program,” Fire Deputy Chief Steve Riley said. “With those funds disappearing from the state budget, Jim Wright from Westmont First suggested that we partner with a local business -- and Bales Ace Hardware agreed to get involved."
To receive a smoke detector, the participant must prove Westmont residency; the detector is only for residential use; and one detector will be provided per 1,000 square feet within a residence.
“We’re happy to work with the fire department on this program,” Stan Bales, Ace Hardware, said. “We recently had a fire at one of our properties, and the fire department did an excellent job responding to the call. If this program helps keep people safe and save lives, then it’s well worth the investment.”
