The College of DuPage Board of Trustees has voted to name the Homeland Security Education Center in honor of the late U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller, Medal of Honor recipient, former Wheaton resident and graduate of Wheaton North High School.
“We are privileged to recognize a great American hero in this way,” Board Chairman Katharine Hamilton said. "It is particularly fitting that Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller’s name should be associated with a building dedicated to educating individuals to protect the homeland that he gave his life to defend."
Miller, a member of the U.S. Army’s 3rd Special Forces Group serving in Afghanistan, was killed in action on Jan. 25, 2008, in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, while saving his team during an ambush by a large, well-coordinated enemy insurgent force. Miller single-handedly charged the enemy over exposed ground and under overwhelming enemy fire to allow his men to move back and safely reach cover.
In October 2010, President Barack Obama awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor to Miller for “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty."
