Lombard to use digitial cameras to assess manholes

Vl

The village of Lombard Public Works Department will use a digital-camera technology program to assess the condition of manholes throughout the village beginning Monday.

The department and contractor Midwest Water will use a digital camera to visually inspect the condition of both sanitary and storm manholes to determine what maintenance and rehabilitation may be needed. The information will be used to generate a series of service contracts that will address deficient structures and determine what appropriate restoration or rehabilitation is required.

The camera will be lowered into the structure and scan the entire interior of the manhole in one vertical run. The digitally transmitted image data will be viewed by the operator, with the condition of the manhole later assessed either on site or in an office.

The first year of the program will be dedicated to videoing, evaluating and cataloging all the identified manholes. During the following three years, a series of construction contracts will be prepared to specifically address the recommended repairs.
