Medicare card introduced to protect against identity theft, combat waste.
U.S. Sens. Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) along with U.S. Reps. Peter Roskam (R-IL) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) on Tuesday introduced legislation to protect seniors from identity theft while combating waste, fraud and abuse in the Medicare system.
“Illinois seniors deserve the same level of security against identity theft as our men and women in uniform,” Kirk said. “By utilizing smart technology, we can protect seniors and stop Medicare fraud before it happens.”
The new cards will combat waste, fraud and abuse within the Medicare system by addressing the pay and chase system. At the present moment, the government pays Medicare reimbursements without first verifying the validity of the charges. If the charges prove fraudulent, attempts are then made to track down those responsible.
The Common Access Card will add another layer of security to Medicare transactions, ensuring patients and their providers billing Medicare are legitimate.
