U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) said she is returning $65,793.51 in congressional office-allowance funds for 2014.
Since taking office in 2013, Duckworth has returned $179,712.05 to federal coffers.
“As members of Congress, we lead by example,” Duckworth said. “With so many working families still trying to make ends meet, it is our responsibility to make sure every tax dollar is being put to good use, and it must begin in our own congressional offices.”
Also, in February 2013, Duckworth took an 8.4 percent pay reduction, which equals the same percentage many discretionary programs were cut as a result of the sequester. She gave back more than $10,000 to the U.S. Treasury to help reduce the debt. Duckworth was the first member of Congress to take such a step.
Duckworth has joined Reps. Ron Kind (D-WI), Reid Ribble (R-WI) and Pat Tiberi (R-OH) in introducing H.R. 3077, the Giveback Deficit Reduction Act. The bill would mandate that all unspent allowances for members of Congress be returned to the Treasury at the end of the year, to be used for deficit reduction.
