The City of Warrenville has recently proposed changes to its garage sale ordinance.

Currently, the city code allows an individual property to conduct informal sales -- such as garage sales, yard sales and neighborhood sales -- for up to ten days during a calendar year, provided they are operated by the residents of the premises where the sale is conducted.

Proposed changes including restricting garage sales to the third weekend of every month, allowing the sale during the months of April through October, Thursday through Sunday, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Permits would not be required. Only new or used items of personal property acquired in the normal course of residential life by the garage sale host, or members of his or her household, may be sold, allowing new and used items and home-grown items such as plants, honey or firewood.

Changes were presented Monday to the community development and planning committee during the meeting.

The purpose of the changes is to strike a balance between the property owner’s interest in conducting such a sale and the neighbors’ interests in maintaining a quiet suburban neighborhood.

Warrenville City Hall is at 28W701 Stafford Place.
