Willis leads petition drive for reduction in property taxes

State Rep. Kathleen Willis (D-Addison) is leading a grassroots petition to collect signatures from residents who are seeking reductions in their Illinois property taxes.

“Every year our property taxes go up, even if the values of homes decline,” Willis said. "Our current property tax system is unsustainable because every year, taxes force more and more families out of their homes."

Willis recently cast a vote in support of stopping the automatic annual increase to property tax levies. Property tax levies, pursuant to the proposed bill, would only be able to increase with local voter approval. The bill, however, failed to pass, which led Willis to embark on the petition drive.

“As I talk to constituents, concern over property taxes are by far the number one issue on their minds,” Willis said. "Something has to be done and I am going to do everything in my power to fight until we have a system that favors taxpayers and protects homeowners.”

Local seminars are being hosted by Willis in Cook and DuPage counties to assist residents in understanding options to lower their property tax bills.
