Higher Learning Commission postpones College of DuPage visit

The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) has postponed a planned accreditation visit to the College of DuPage (COD) scheduled for today following the resignation of one of its members.

Jackson (Miss.) Community College President Dan Phelan, who was scheduled to participate in the COD visit, resigned from the HLC after the watchdog group Illinois Leaks published two articles saying Phelan was not qualified to serve on the commission.

Phelan allegedly spent thousands of dollars in public funds on alcohol, meals and trees for his home without approval by the college's board.

"Phelan is tainted with corruption and inappropriate spending at Jackson College and has no business serving on the Higher Learning Commission or any other public office under the circumstances," Illinois Leaks wrote in an article published on its website over the weekend.

Phelan allegedly received a vote of no confidence at the Mississippi college from two union groups.

“Unfortunately, by prolonging [the HLC's] arrival, they are raising doubts about a fine institution that is focused on its educational mission,” COD board of trustees Chairwoman Katharine Hamilton said. “Based on this occurrence, we will insist on closely examining the backgrounds of all potential HLC reviewers to ensure a proper assessment of the college that protects all of the educational work done by our faculty and students on behalf of our taxpayers."
