The spread of the West Nile Virus nationwide has led many communities like the City of Wheaton, Illinois, to take necessary steps to prevent the spread of the disease.
Wheaton is within the boundary of the Wheaton Mosquito Abatement District. The district has contracted with Clarke Mosquito Control to control nuisance mosquitoes, reduce the potential of mosquito borne disease transmission and offer a healthy atmosphere for residents.
Mosquito control is accomplished utilizing Integrated Pest Management, an approach that includes larval site monitoring, biological control and the strategic use of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency labeled and registered pesticide products.
Residents are reminded to dress in light colored, long sleeved clothing, long pants and socks if outdoors, and to apply mosquito repellent with DEET to clothing and exposed skin.
Residents are asked to report neglected pools to the mosquito hotline at 1-800-942-2555.
Also, discard any outdoor container that might hold water or empty water from wading pools and birdbaths once a week; keep grass cut short and shrubbery trimmed around the house so adult mosquitoes will not find a place to hide; and do not dump grass clippings into low lying areas that collect water after rain falls.
