This week in Springfield, Illinois, State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-IL) responded to a bill to extend the CPS pension payment deadline.
The House debated a bill sponsored by two Chicago Democrats that would extend the deadline by six weeks, in which the City of Chicago would have to make a required $634-million pension payment for Chicago teachers. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently commented that the city does not have enough funds to make the mandatory payment. As such, a deadline extension was needed.
Senate Bill 437 failed to pass by a vote of 53 to 46 to two.
After the vote, Ives spoke about the need for Chicago to address its financial crisis.
