Lombard Fire Department receives American Heart Association award

Bloglombardfire4

The Lombard Fire Department recently was honored by the American Heart Association (AHA) for providing specialized training for its first responders to treat ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) symptoms in heart attack patients.

Art Miller, Illinois Mission Lifeline director at the AHA, presented the Bronze Level award to the department. Only 17 other fire departments in the state  -- including four in DuPage County -- have received the award.

Paid for with funds approved by the Village of Lombard's board, the lifesaving equipment and training allowed the department's firefighters to treat four patients with STEMI symptoms last year. The treatment is crucial to minimizing the damage caused by heart attacks.

STEMI heart attacks are the most acute type of heart attack and are usually caused by the sudden complete blockage of one of the arteries in the heart.

The Lombard Fire Department is committed to offering both residents as well as visitors with the best level of public safety possible.
