St. Charles Fourth Ward Alderman Jim Martin will officially end his term on May 4.

The public is invited to wish him a fond farewell at the 7 p.m. council meeting.

Martin, the longest known serving elected official, was first elected alderman in 1979. He has served under four mayors and maintained perfect attendance throughout his 36 year tenure as a public servant. Prior to serving as alderman, Martin served on the zoning hearing board from 1974 to 1979.

He and his wife, Rita Davis, have three sons, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Martin served in the U.S. Navy and previously worked for Star Sales Ltd., retiring as president in 2001 after 27 years.

Also at that May 4 meeting, Fourth Ward Alderman-Elect Steven Gaugel will be sworn in, along with returning aldermen Daniel P. Stellato, Ward 1; Rita Anne Payleitner, Ward 2; Todd A. Bancroft, Ward 3; and Ed Bessner, Ward 5.
