U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-IL) has expressed his support for the Secret Science Reform Act (H.R. 1030).
H.R. 1030 prohibits the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from creating new regulations unless all pertinent scientific and technical information is made sufficiently available for analysis.
The bill came about due to the EPA's failure to release the science behind numerous regulations both to outside researchers and Congress.
“Transparency and reproducibility are basic tenets of sound science, but EPA has instead repeatedly chosen to bypass Congress and remain tight-lipped about the science they rely on to place new regulations on Americans,” Hultgren said. “Whenever the administration hands down more regulations, American taxpayers have a right to see the data and determine if those rules are based on sound science. Protecting the environment is an important priority, which is why any regulations passed down should have the science to back them up. H.R. 1030 ensures this transparency, while maintaining necessary confidentiality of healthcare information and applicable federal privacy standards.”
Hultgren originally co-sponsored the bill and has spoken on the House floor during the 113th Congress, advocating for openness and transparency to the EPA.
