U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) strongly supports the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s recent decision to allow special protections for the Mahomet Aquifer by designating it as a sole source of drinking water for residents of east-central Illinois.
“This designation will protect the hundreds of thousands of east-central Illinois residents who rely on the Mahomet Aquifer for safe drinking water,” Kirk said. “Keeping this key source of water safe is essential to maintaining a high quality of life in these communities.”
The designation will afford greater protection for the aquifer, while the application to expand Clinton Landfill above the aquifer is pending.
Back in 2012, Kirk and fellow U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) forwarded a letter to the EPA, expressing concern for the proposed industrial waste facility at Clinton Landfill, namely the potential risk of contamination from toxic chemicals, such as polychlorinated biphenyls.
Kirk and Durbin urged the EPA to consider the Sole Source Aquifer application submitted by a group of east-central Illinois communities.
