Chuck Clarke, highway commissioner of Lisle Township, said this week that he will retire on Saturday.

Clarke first began working for Lisle Township in 1972. For eight years, he was an elected township trustee. For another eight years, he served as an elected township clerk, then spent 12 years as an elected township supervisor.

Michael Dow was the previous highway commissioner. When he passed away, Clarke replaced him in 2013.

Clarke said he anticipates seeing new ideas and eager leadership from Lisle Township's newest leaders.

"Our township has accomplished quite a number of 'firsts' during these years,” Clarke wrote in a letter to the community. “Lisle Township was responsible for pushing a state law limiting speed limits to 35 mph in unincorporated residential areas. Lisle Township was the first to pass an ordinance regulating refuse pickup for unincorporated residents. We became 'transparent,' listing all expenses on our web page. In fact, Lisle Township was a county leader in developing a website. A weekly Monday-Wednesday-Friday food pantry was established for township residents that need a 'little help' to get through some hard times. The award-winning Lisle Township Job Club helps the unemployed to become employed again.”
