Weisner receives 2014 Governmental Leader of the Year Award

Aurora, Illinois, Mayor Tom Weisner recently received the 2014 Governmental Leader of the Year Award from the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference (DMMC).

The award was presented by Roselle, Illinois, Mayor and DMMC Vice President Gayle Smolinski at the DMMC annual legislative action dinner held in Lisle, Illinois.

Weisner, who has served three terms as Aurora mayor, was lauded for his leadership on issues such as public safety pension reform, rail freight safety and sustainable water planning.

"Mayor Weisner is a leader on the regional, state and national level," Smolinski said. "He has set a strong example for his fellow municipal officials with his innovation and efficiency in Aurora."

During his tenure, Weisner has also been credited with strengthening neighborhoods, revitalizing the city's riverfront, developing a high-performing telecommunication infrastructure to help reduce crime, and introducing the RiverEdge Park.

Weisner is past chairman of the Chicago Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, the Kane/Kendall representative to the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, an executive board member of the Illinois Municipal League, and a past president of Metro West Council of Governments.

Weisner was also appointed as a director of the Illinois Toll Highway Authority, serving as chair of the authority's strategic planning committee, and is the founding chairman of the Northwest Water Planning Alliance.
