Illinois state Sen. Dan Kotowski (D-Park Ridge) has recently taken action in the form of Senate Bill 2 and 3 to ensure more government accountability and transparency.
Senate Bill 2 aims to closely examine tax dollars spent by the state government. The bill also directs the state to eliminate its $1.4 billion Group Health debt by 2019. Senate Bill 3 would provide more public access to financial documents relating to the state, specifically requiring the governor to post the preliminary budget online within a week of it being proposed.
"This is part of my continued effort to improve budget transparency, pay down our bills and get our state back in good fiscal health," Kotowski said.
An unpcoming hearing will provide an opportunity for a senate committee to discuss and debate both pieces of legislation.
