Longtime College of DuPage (COD) President Robert Breuder told the Board of Trustees in a letter last week that he plans to retire next year.
The board approved Breuder's retirement, set for March 31, 2016.
Board Chairwoman Erin Birt lauded Breuder's contributions to the college during his 35 years of service as president.
“His list of accomplishments is staggering," Birt said. "COD will benefit from his foresight and guidance for generations to come. We are pleased to have come to an agreement that best serves the college while recognizing the incredible leadership Dr. Breuder has shown.”
Trustee Dianne McGuire said Breuder's vision helped elevate the profile of the college, resulting in an institution of higher learning highly sought out by prospective students.
Trustee Nancy Svoboda noted Breuder's efforts to implement technical baccalaureate degrees, a program that Trustee Kim Savage said has been modeled and implemented by 22 states in the nation.
“I will miss Dr. Breuder,” Trustee Joe Wozniak said. “I wish he were staying. Under his leadership, we have become a stronger institution that is better able to serve our district. He is the best thing to happen to COD in a long time.”
