Sanalitro renews push to end state taxes on tips and overtime pay
Illinois State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro (R-Hanover Park) has announced renewed efforts to provide tax relief for service workers in the state. This comes after the Illinois General Assembly did not advance legislation during the 2025 session that would have eliminated state taxes on tips.
House Bill 1898, introduced by Sanalitro in spring 2025, proposes amending the Illinois Income Tax Act to allow an income tax deduction for gratuities included in a taxpayer’s federal adjusted gross income. The bill remains under consideration as lawmakers reconvene for the 2026 legislative session.
“Our tipped workers still deserve a break,” said Rep. Sanalitro. “They work long hours, often for modest wages, and the tips they earn should not be subject to additional state taxes. This is a simple, common-sense solution that would let service workers keep more of what they earn.”
While federal authorities have taken steps toward removing taxes on tips, Illinois has not yet implemented similar measures. Sanalitro expressed disappointment with the lack of progress at the state level and affirmed her intention to continue advocating for working families.
“At a time when families are struggling with higher costs for groceries, gas, and housing, the least we can do is stop taxing tips,” Sanalitro added. “I will continue fighting to pass HB1898 because our service workers deserve a lawmaker who stands up for them.”
In addition to House Bill 1898, Sanalitro has introduced House Bill 1899 aimed at eliminating state taxes on overtime pay as part of her broader effort to reduce tax burdens on residents.
As the new legislative session begins, she encourages constituents to contact their legislators in support of these proposals.
Sanalitro was elected as a Republican representative in 2023 and serves Illinois’ 48th House District after succeeding Terra Costa Howard. Her district covers Addison, Bensenville, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Elk Grove Village, Hanover Park, Itasca, Medinah, Roselle, Schaumburg and Wood Dale in DuPage and Cook counties.
