Sanalitro backs bill establishing local advisory committees for special education
State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro has co-sponsored House Bill 1106, a measure that would allow Illinois school districts or regional cooperatives providing special education services to establish Local Advisory Committees on Special Education. The formation of such committees would be triggered if more than three parents or guardians of students receiving special education request one.
Sanalitro stated: “I support giving parents a stronger voice in their child’s education, especially when it comes to special education services. This legislation allows parents and guardians to come together through a local advisory committee to share feedback and work directly with their school district."
She added: “If families are asking for a seat at the table, they should have one. This legislation effectively creates a clear structure for local advisory committees that will improve communication, increase transparency, and help ensure students with special needs are receiving the support they deserve.”
Sanalitro also said: “Parents know their children best, and their input is critical to building a special education system that works for every family.”
The bill aims to provide parents and guardians with more opportunities to communicate with school officials regarding special education programs. Sanalitro was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 48th House District in 2023, succeeding Terra Costa Howard.
House District 48 includes several suburban communities in DuPage and Cook counties such as Addison, Bensenville, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Elk Grove Village, Hanover Park, Itasca, Medinah, Roselle, Schaumburg, and Wood Dale.
