In Illinois, State Representative Amy Grant (R-Wheaton) is using Stroke Awareness Month as an opportunity to emphasize the significance of recognizing stroke symptoms and acting promptly.
“Every minute matters when it comes to stroke,” said Rep. Grant. “Quick action can make the difference between recovery and lasting damage—or even death.”
The American Stroke Association identifies stroke as a major cause of death and disability in the United States. A stroke happens when a clot or rupture disrupts blood flow to the brain, causing brain cells to die within minutes. Notably, 1 in 4 stroke survivors faces the risk of another stroke, but up to 80% of these subsequent strokes can be prevented.
Rep. Grant advises residents to familiarize themselves with the F.A.S.T warning signs: Face Drooping, Arm Weakness, Speech Difficulty, and Time to Call 911.
“Knowing the F.A.S.T. signs and acting immediately can save a life—maybe even your own,” Grant added. “Let’s work together to raise awareness and keep our communities safe.”
