Pre-trial release denied for man with altered weapon

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Westmont Chief of Police James Gunther announced that Judge Michael Reidy has denied pre-trial release for Canutie Collins, a 20-year-old from Westmont. Collins is accused of possessing a loaded firearm modified to function as a fully automatic weapon. He faces charges of Unlawful Use of a Weapon – Machine Gun (Class X Felony) and Unlawful Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle (Class 2 Felony). His co-defendant, Mathias Henyard, 18, from Chicago, also appeared in court charged with Unlawful Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle.

Bartlett man found guilty but mentally ill in mother's stabbing death

A former Bartlett resident, Edward Mitzelfeld, has been found guilty but mentally ill in the stabbing death of his 93-year-old mother. DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced that Judge Daniel Guerin delivered the verdict following a seven-day bench trial which concluded on March 22, 2024.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and West Chicago Chief of Police Colin Fleury have announced that Judge Joshua Dieden has denied the State's request to detain James Vaughn, a West Chicago resident accused of fatally striking a pedestrian with his vehicle. Vaughn, aged 43, appeared in court facing two counts of Aggravated DUI Causing Death.

Aurora teen charged with possession of semiautomatic weapon

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Naperville Chief of Police Jason Arres have reported that a 15-year-old male from Aurora has been charged with possessing a loaded semiautomatic pistol. During a detention hearing, Judge Chantelle Porter ordered the juvenile to be released to his mother's custody under home detention. The charges include one count of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, classified as a Class 4 Felony, and one count of Misdemeanor Possession of Ammunition without a FOID Card.
