The Illinois Tollway announced on March 26 that the ramp connecting northbound Tri-State Tollway (I-294) to I-190 and River Road will be reduced to a single lane beginning the week of March 30 and continuing into April. The lane reduction is due to ongoing plaza improvements at the O’Hare Interchange, and delays are expected.
This project is part of efforts to improve traffic flow and mobility across the tollway system. Electronic message signs and construction signage will alert drivers in advance, while up-to-date information will be available on the Illinois Tollway website. All work is weather dependent.
Work at the plaza began in 2025 with removal of existing toll plaza canopies and barrier walls, followed by installation of new monotube structures and tolling infrastructure. Additional construction includes ramp pavement, shoulder work, electrical upgrades, lighting, and signage improvements. Coordination for these closures involves several agencies including the Illinois Department of Transportation, Pace Suburban Bus, City of Des Plaines, Village of Rosemont, as well as local fire and police departments.
The improvements are part of Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future—a 16-year capital program valued at $15 billion—and Bridging the Future—a seven-year plan approved in December 2024 totaling $2 billion for continued infrastructure enhancements. According to information provided by the agency, these programs focus on structural safety priorities while supporting regional economic growth through modernization initiatives.
Drivers are reminded that construction zone speed limits are enforced around-the-clock. The “Move Over Law” requires motorists to change lanes or slow down when passing vehicles with hazard lights activated; penalties for violations include fines up to $25,000 or jail time if workers are struck.
